In September, The Reflector counted 18 coffee businesses in Battle Ground. Brewed Awakenings is expected to become the 19th in January 2027, and a proposed 7 Brew Coffee would be the 20th. For a town this size, that many places selling espresso makes "where should I get coffee" an odd question. The real question is which stand fits which errand, and the owners describe it the same way.
Austin Slagle owns Dev's Coffee Bar. He told the paper that "every single one of these coffee shops has a specific thing that they're known for," and added, "They're the same but they're not." The 18 coffee businesses don't split the town by neighborhood. Each one holds onto its own specialty. This fall, the strip of West Main where that model is most crowded faces a new proposal, and two cafés planned for 2027 are adding something few stands offer: indoor seats.
Fifty Feet of West Main
At the Wilco end of West Main, three small businesses share almost the same patch of pavement. Espresso Express sits in the Wilco parking lot. It has operated in Battle Ground for more than 30 years. Owner Sam Cruz has worked there for nearly 15 of them, and she has owned it for about five. Next to it is Thirst Trap Soda Shack at 805 W. Main St., which Tera Gale opened in November 2024 after months of work to bring electricity and water to the site. Coffee Creations, owned by a woman named Kiara, is close by.
Three drink businesses this close together work because their owners deliberately stay out of each other's lanes. Gale explained it plainly:
"We offer no coffee just because we don't want to compete with Sam (owner of nearby Espresso Express) or with Kiara (owner of nearby Coffee Creations). And I mean, we're all 50 feet apart here in either direction."
Thirst Trap sells dirty sodas and energy drinks instead. Cruz says Espresso Express has outlasted earlier competition by keeping its own identity rather than copying other stands. Her specialty blended drinks include a toffee crunch that regulars ask for by name.
What Each Stop Is Known For
When you run through the town's coffee options by specialty, the 18 make more sense:
- Espresso Express, Wilco lot on West Main. Specialty blended drinks, including the toffee crunch, and regulars Cruz says she sees daily.
- Dev's Coffee Bar. Bagels make up more than half of sales, according to Slagle. That makes it a breakfast stop that also serves coffee.
- Thirst Trap Soda Shack, 805 W. Main St. Dirty sodas and energy drinks, with no coffee on purpose.
- Al & Ernie's Bakery Cafe, Main Street. A full breakfast and lunch menu and a cinnamon roll that has sold nearly 40,000 times so far in 2026. The café serves 5,000 to 6,000 customers a week.
- The national drive-throughs. Dutch Bros at 1505 W. Main St. #101, Black Rock at 950 SW Scotton Way, Suite 100, and Starbucks.
The Reflector puts the rest at more than a dozen locally owned stands and cafés. Slagle's point holds up on that list. The coffee overlaps from stop to stop, and the reason to pull in is different at each one.
Where the 7 Brew Proposal Actually Stands
This is the backdrop for the 7 Brew proposal. The Arkansas-based company submitted pre-application materials at the end of August for a location at 805 W. Main St. As of mid-September, city staff were still reviewing the plans and no pre-application conference had been scheduled. The paper stressed that the proposal "does not represent final approval for construction." The site plan puts a 510-square-foot drive-through on essentially the same spot as Thirst Trap.
A filing at this stage is an early step, and this site has seen one before. In February 2025, three months after Thirst Trap opened, a Space Age Fuel Station filed a pre-application with a convenience store placed exactly where the soda shack sits. That project never got past the pre-application conference, and its review closed in August 2025.
The people closest to the proposal see it differently. 7 Brew franchisee Rick Nader told The Reflector, "There's enough room for everybody. Enough business for everybody." Cruz's concern is about promotions. She said a small stand can't keep matching a large chain's buy-three-get-one-free offers. Gale said she does not blame 7 Brew for looking for a spot in Battle Ground. As of September 29, she was still operating under her current lease, still making payments, and had not decided whether to leave. She also said a drive-through is essential to her business and that finding a site like this one was hard.
For now, the three stands near Wilco are open, and the proposal is still in early review.
The Next Two Arrivals Come With Chairs
The two coffee openings actually announced for Battle Ground are a different format from the proposal on West Main. Both are cafés with indoor seating.
Brewed Awakenings Coffee Roasters plans to open in January 2027 at West Main Commons, near Main Street and Southwest 13th Avenue. The space will have indoor seating and Main Street frontage. On social media, the company called Battle Ground "one of our most requested locations for years." West Main Commons is a mixed-use project at 1305 W. Main St. It will have four retail buildings connected to a 225-unit apartment community by a public promenade. A credit union, an Edward Jones office, Barbie Lounge, and a ramen restaurant have also signed leases there.
On the east side, Blue Castle Coffee did not renew its lease at 802 SE 14th Place in Battle Ground Village and moved out in August. Al & Ernie's has leased the 940-square-foot space and plans to remodel it late this year. "Al & Ernie's in the Village" is expected to open in early 2027. It will be about a third the size of the Main Street café and will serve a limited selection of baked goods with espresso, coffee, and tea. The full breakfast and lunch menus will stay at the original location. General manager Devin Bowen told Clark County Today the move ensures "Battle Ground Village maintains a coffee shop for residents, employers and guests."
The Village café also continues a local pattern. It will be the fourth business from the Battle Ground Hospitality Collective, which is owned by Battle Ground brothers Camden and Mac Spiller. The group also runs the original Al & Ernie's, the Battle Ground Farmers Market, and Tuke's Public House & Garden.
Planning the Morning Run Through November
Until the new cafés open, the existing stops are the routine, and a few road projects will shape how you reach them this fall. In August, the city forecast paving on Southwest 20th Avenue for October 29, with the project wrapping up around November 13. The new pedestrian path along Southwest 20th was already finished and usable at that point. On Scotton Way between state Route 503 and Parkway Avenue, more excavation and paving was scheduled for later this fall, with completion expected around November 25. These are city forecasts, not fixed dates, and street work schedules move.
Here's how the calendar looks from early October:
- Now through the holidays. The 18 existing stops, including the three neighbors at the Wilco end of West Main, all operating.
- Late 2026. Remodeling begins at 802 SE 14th Place, and the first West Main Commons retail spaces are expected to be delivered.
- January 2027. Brewed Awakenings' planned opening at West Main Commons.
- Early 2027. Al & Ernie's in the Village's expected opening.
- No date. The 7 Brew proposal, which was still waiting on a pre-application conference as of the latest reporting.
The toffee crunch at Espresso Express, the bagels at Dev's, and the dirty sodas at Thirst Trap are all available this week, from businesses that chose their specialties partly so they wouldn't step on each other.
